Off-Shore – Bahrain’s favourite Dive Sites

clownfish under water

It might take between 1 and 2 hours to get to these sites, but it’s 200% worth it!

Recommended for Advanced Open Water divers, due to depth, possible environmental conditions including current, and distance from shore.

Al Boom Wreck (21m approx):
For Advanced Open Water Divers, this is a MUST VISIT during your stay in Bahrain, along with Abu Thalma Reef, just below. Al Boom Wreck is a wooden shipping Dhow which sank in an upright position while carrying a shipment of toilets and cement. The wreck offers a spectacular selection of marine life, from small to medium fish on the wreck itself to the larger predatory fish (barracuda etc.) which patrol just off the wreck itself. The dive usually runs along a profile as follows, descend, follow the hull of the Dhow to the stern and round to the other side if current permits, followed by a second run down the hull back to the bow and across the top of the wreck.

Dive Bahrain – Boeing 747 (20-17m approx):
Have you ever wished for a closer look at a Boeing 747? Your chance is certainly here with Bahrain’s Dive Bahrain Boeing 747 artificial reef – a first in the records for a 747 used as artificial reefs anywhere in the world plus the spectacular nature of this site itself. Large schools of fish, Bahrain’s native fauna and flora and more await, whether you’re in the aircraft’s cockpit, cruising down one of the massive wings, or swimming aft to inspect its huge rudder – truly a treat for all!

Abu Thalma (8m – 15m approx):
Lying 70km approx off-shore, this is the pride and joy of Bahrain’s diving community. A reef rising from the depths of the Arabian Gulf and offering a full complement of the Gulf’s best, from beautiful Clown Fish to Arabian Angel Fish and much more, including visits by Turtles and even Whale Sharks. The reef’s primary area is in approximately 8m to 12m of depth, with outlying areas dropping to 15m approx. Special thanks to the Government of Bahrain for the laying of permanent buoys here and at several of Bahrain’s other reefs.

Caisson Wreck:
A concrete structure which prior to sinking was some sort of construction platform we believe. The walls and top of this platform have been claimed by the sea and now offer great fish life and at times when the current isn’t too bad, a pleasant swim around. There are areas of the walls of the structure that appear to have been damaged and from which protrude meter-long pieces of “rebar” which, while make for impressive photos, should be avoided for those not fond of tetanus jabs.

Bringing a friend who isn’t quite ready for this? Or, facing a few weather restrictions?
